Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
