British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
